Pinkish-red rubies and creamy-white pearls give this necklace a warm, summery look. A wide, multi-tiered centerpiece is set on a delicate gold chain. Curves and floral motifs lead toward the center, which is formed by a heart-shaped element. A large, brilliant ruby is additionally suspended beneath it, allowing it to move freely. All stones are set in yellow gold. Particularly interesting is the use of different types of rubies. The stones in the main ornaments are untreated rubies from Burma, now known as Myanmar—traditionally the most important source of particularly high-quality rubies. The large, freely moving ruby at the lower end, on the other hand, most likely originates from Thailand. The smaller pendants on the right and left, in turn, are set with synthetic rubies, an invention of the early 20th century. In its individual design elements, the necklace is reminiscent of British jewellery from c. 1910. The combination of yellow gold and delicate pearls is also distinctly British; so-called “necklets” were all the rage at the time. However, the setting of rubies—which are given equal prominence to the pearls—lends the piece of jewellery a different character, reminiscent of the often colorful and richly adorned jewellery of India or Sri Lanka. This blend of different design traditions suggests that the necklace was created in a part of what was then British India. There, styles that had already gone out of fashion in the mother country often lingered a bit longer, so the necklace could very well have been created as late as the 1920s or 1930s. We discovered it in London, along with its matching vintage case.
