Cufflinks are one of the few pieces of jewellery in the classic men's wardrobe. They first appeared in the second half of the 19th century, when starched shirts became too stiff to be fastened with ordinary buttons; however, numerous forms of cufflinks soon developed, all of which went with the jewellery fashions of their time. The present pair can be dated to around 1920, as it was only in the first decades of the last century that onyx came into fashion as the main stone in purely decorative jewellery; previously it had been reserved for mourning jewelry. But now, with the advent of classical modernism, all reservations about this non-color were set aside and it was appreciated for its classical elegance. Opposites meet here in a timelessly elegant composition. Four round discs of deep black onyx, equally concave, each frame a small octagonal diamond. The onyx and diamonds are set in light platinum. On the back, the buttons and the corresponding chains are made of high-carat yellow gold. For dating purposes, we have reproduced a page from the catalog of the Philadelphia jeweler Kind & Sons from 1920, which shows comparable buttons. The cufflinks are in very good condition and came to us from Munich. According to their hallmarks, the buttons were made in Great Britain.
