When, after the long years of war, food shortages, currency reform and initial reconstruction, the lust for life returned to German cities and living rooms, when the economic miracle enabled the first new prosperity in the centers of industry and commerce, the art of jewelry design also awoke to new life after many years of dreamless slumber. The goldsmiths and jewelry designers of the late 1930s and 1940s had often wavered indecisively between the forms of a strict, geometric Art Deco and the repetition of Biedermeier and historicist elements desired by the state. Experimental design found its way into jewelry design as well as into the art of these years. This ring dates from around 1955 and is made of high-carat gold and set with five natural green tourmalines, so-called "verdeliths". The oval-cut tourmalines occupy the apexes of five sweeping waves that form the ring face and merge into the simple ring band in smaller, meandering lines. The insides of the resulting golden arches are engraved in a radial pattern, which additionally refracts the light.
