Description
The sensibilities, desires and dreams of a society can be read not only in the most modern phenomena - but also precisely in which past epochs of history come into renewed interest and are interpreted for the present. Around 1800, for example, stylistic elements of classical antiquity embodied Enlightenment ideals such as education, freedom and rationality throughout Europe. Then, around the middle of the century, during the reign of the French Emperor Napoleon III, buildings, furniture, and ornaments in the style of the late 18th century harked back to the pre-revolutionary period, creating an idea of continuity. In the last third of the 20th century, jewellery in the style of the Victorian era followed a similar pattern. They countered the cool postmodernism, which deliberately avoided ornamentation, with a warm, nostalgic note. This ear jewellery was created as a reminiscence of this epoch and is committed to the archaeological style that was widespread in the Victorian era. The earrings each present a three-part arrangement of a center element and two gold beads attached to the earwire. The well-maintained pair is crafted from 9-karat gold, which has been given an additional gilding for a wonderfully velvety, rich shimmer. The pendants are also hollow and therefore particularly light and comfortable to wear. Elegant, present and at the same time full of references to European cultural history, this pair from around 1985 is a magnificent and wearable piece of ear jewellery in a decidedly appealing form. The earrings came to us from London and, according to the hallmarks, were also made in England.
