These earrings from the 1920s are a special treat. The earrings initially present two sparkling diamonds on simple gold leverbacks. A smaller stone in the old 8/8 cut accompanies a larger brilliant-cut stone. The diamonds are set in geometric fields of platinum and have milgrains embellished on the edge to create additional sparkle. Two pearls set gently shimmering accents below the fields of diamonds. They are gray-violet and have a soft, slightly matt lustre. Seen from the front, they are very round; seen from the side, they have a slight bouton shape, which matches the earrings beautifully. In fact, it is the pearls that make the earrings very special jewels. They are natural river pearls from Europe, i.e. natural pearls from fresh water, most likely from a river in Scotland! River pearls have always been rare rarities in Europe, famous are the pearl necklaces made of river pearls of the kings in Bavaria or in the Dresden Green Vault, see here. With the increasing industrialization of our continent, however, the pearl oyster Margaritifera margaritifera became increasingly rare. Today it is threatened with extinction. The few remaining populations are therefore strictly protected. Fishing them to find pearls is prohibited. So it is a special exception to see pearls like these. We have had an independent expert report drawn up on the pearls, which confirms their origin and their formation in nature. The somewhat porcelain-like shimmer of the pearls is typical of river pearls. The clear, elegant design gives the pendants a modern appearance - very much in the spirit of Art Deco - and clearly distinguishes them from the more playful designs of the Victorian era. More recently, the earwires and the modern cut diamonds have been renewed.

The self-image of women changed rapidly at the beginning of the 20th century compared to the previous decades and led to a true social revolution. After a long struggle for equal rights and the right to vote in large parts of Europe, this new self-image was also reflected in the fashion of the interwar period - a modern style that found expression in literature and painting as well as in jewelry design. This pair of earrings from the 1920s was created during the same period in which Virginia Woolf published her groundbreaking novel Mrs. Dalloway. The work depicts the thoughts and actions of a small circle of people in London on a June Wednesday in 1923. Woolf found inspiration in her acquaintance with Lady Ottoline Morrell, an aristocrat and important patron of the arts. Morrell, a member of the famous Bloomsbury Circle, fascinated people with her extravagant appearance and exotic lifestyle. She opened her salon in Bedford Square at ten o'clock on Thursdays - a meeting place for personalities such as D. H. Lawrence, Winston Churchill and others. Isn't it wonderful to think that these earrings were created in the London of those glamorous years while all this was going on?
