The art of Far Eastern cultures has long been an inspiration to European artists. The foreign perspective was so different, the shapes and colors so fresh to the Western eye. As early as the end of the 16th century, Delft ceramists were producing blue and white objects based on Chinese models, and in the late 19th century, Art Nouveau artists dared to renew Western art - not least with the help of the flowing lines they had become familiar with in Japanese woodblock prints. From the 1920s onwards, Chinese impulses found their way back into Central European jewelry designs. This time, the focus of interest was on Chinese carvings in cinnabar and black lacquer as well as green jade. The aesthetics of the lacquer work were achieved in Chinese-inspired Art Deco jewellery using coral and onyx or enamel, while jade was retained as a material. In combination with gold, platinum and diamonds, pieces of jewelry were created that had never been seen before. Such jewels from the Art Deco period were the inspiration for our goldsmiths when they made these earrings from jade and small gold earrings from around 1940, which feature the typical graphic design language of the retro style. The softly carved, lime green jade stones create an attractive contrast of shapes and colors. Depicted in wonderfully three-dimensional carvings are a hare and an ox as lucky animals of the Chinese zodiac. The jade plaques can be inserted into and removed from the earrings, allowing the pair to be worn in two different ways.
