This necklace was created in our workshop - but it was put together from antique elements. The large, drum-shaped corals originally came from a necklace of the Krakow or Ukrainian costumes. These costumes are worn with multi-strand necklaces made of Mediterranean coral, but the beads reached us individually and in insufficient numbers to make a complete necklace in several rows. So we added small intermediate beads, also made of Mediterranean coral, to the hand-cut drums. A spherical silver clasp holds the resulting necklace securely. In the Ukrainian national costume, the coral was considered a badge of wealth. The more strands a necklace had, the wealthier its wearer was considered to be - much like the silver choker necklaces of southern German costume. But it was also valued as a protective amulet and was supposed to ward off evil. In addition, it was believed that red corals marked their wearer as healthy and lively, while greyish corals indicated impending illness. The fact that some coral species are now strictly protected by law and that the demand for coral jewellery has increased dramatically in recent years, make it more than ever a sought-after treasure. Only antique pieces or corals from old stock come onto the market today - the quantity is therefore limited and finite.
