Egypt, with its fascinating relics of the Pharaonic era, has always been a destination of longing for many travelers from all over the world. In the years shortly before the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, Egypt fever broke out once again: the canal was to connect the North Atlantic with the Indian Ocean and save ship travelers the long journey around Africa. This wave of Egyptomania continued into the 1880s and was soon even reflected in jewellery. One of the notable representatives of the style was Émile-Désiré Philippe (1834-1880), who presented a magnificent parure in the Egyptian style at the Paris World Exhibition of 1878, which he subsequently donated to the Musée des Arts Décoratifs. The necklace of the parure was even immortalized in a painting. The central figure in Edwin Long's Love's Labor Lost from 1885 is adorned with it. The painting is now in the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York, see here. The present necklace bears striking design similarities to the necklace, as well as to a parure recently auctioned in Paris, also signed by Philippe, see here. We therefore assume that this necklace is also by Émile-Désiré Philippe, even though it bears no hallmarks or signature. Like those pieces, our necklace is made of gold-plated silver, which is engraved on the back and decorated with colorful cloisonné enamel on the front. Figurative links in the same technique alternate with carved stone scarabs. At the center of the necklace is a stylized Horus falcon in the form we know from ancient Egyptian pectorals. To the left and right are further Horus falcons, figures of Isis and stylized lotus blossoms. This magnificent and richly decorated necklace is an impressive testimony to Egyptomania in the last third of the 19th century. On the necklace exhibited in 1878, see also Charlotte Gere/Judy Rudoe, Jewellery in the Age of Queen Victoria (London: British Museum Press, 2010), p. 384 f.
