Rings with curved rails, between whose ends precious gemstones or pearls are presented, are first encountered in the years around 1900. Inspired by the dynamic forms of Art Nouveau, this jewellery fashion quickly became a great success. No wonder that corresponding designs remained modern until our own years, despite all other changes in taste. The ring presented here, which has two brilliant-cut diamonds with a total weight of about 0.44 carat enclosed between its arms, was created in this tradition. It is made of 14-carat white gold. Eight small octagon-cut diamonds lend their fire to the curved ends of the ring's band. The ring was created in the years around 1965. The cut of the diamonds and the solid construction entirely of white gold are characteristic of jewellery of that time, even though the design itself, with its floral ornaments on the sides, still retains all the influence of Art Nouveau. We reproduce a page from the 1965 catalogue of the Texas Houston Jewelers, which offers a comparable model as a "twin ring" under the letter A on p. 10. An old tradition also gives the two diamonds in the middle of the ring a symbolic meaning: rings like this are called "toi-et-moi rings" and the two diamonds are supposed to symbolically stand for the two lovers. The ring is in very good condition and found its way to us from Düsseldorf.
